The Ball-Chatham Board of Education approved the implementation of a smartphone app that will allow teachers and staff at Glenwood High School, to create a direct link between each other and the closest law enforcement officers during an active school shooting emergency.
The SchoolGuard app has the capability to speed dial 911 and instantly send out an alert directly to nearby enforcement offices from ALL jurisdictions, both ON and OFF duty. This type of technology is supported and endorsed by our local law enforcement officers and will be a useful, if not critical, tool in our crisis communication plans. Training for staff on how to download (access to download is limited and specific) and use the app will begin soon.
The initial cost for implementing the app and making it work specific for our district is $2500. That cost is being underwritten thanks to a generous donation by Green Toyota. Thereafter, the cost to maintain the app would be $99 a month. The District is planning on extending the app to teachers and staff at each of our buildings.
The Ball-Chatham Educational Foundation is hosting its 7th annual 5K Run/Walk event to raise money for education initiatives within the Ball-Chatham School District on November 15th. Again this year, there will be a 1 mile run, the Titan Trot, for younger runners. Over the past six years, money raised from the Titan Trek event has helped purchase interactive whiteboard systems and/or components, valued at over $2,500 each. These were distributed to every designated K-8th grade classroom in the district. Further, multiple systems were funded by the Foundation and installed in high school classrooms. Last year the foundation awarded $24,000 for the purchase of Chromebooks. Monies raised will still support District technology enhancements, and learning opportunities that are available outside the classroom through foundation "Beyond the Walls" grant applications.
